The hat

Many of you know my Dad peacefully passed last month from Alzheimer's, we were fortunate to have shared many of his 98 years with him.

This had was originally worn by his oldest brother, it was handed down to my Dad. As we're slowly going through his items. I found the hat in the garage.

We're learning that we'll be doing some agricultural work in Noto, given my Dad was a gardener, it seems apropos for me to wear his hat. It'll be my small tribute to him.

This photo is taken from the Noto Help Facebook page. I'm assuming this is one of the tasks we'll be part of. I also know there's going to be needs in the temporary housing, from providing meals to participating in community building. One thing about being a disaster relief volunteer, the need to be flexible is a given.

We continue our prep as we prepart to depart on late Sunday night / early Monday. For those of you who pray, please remember our team as we get packed and get ready for this venture. Grateful for your support!

It's the heat AND the humidity

After a couple of days breaking down concrete walls, we were moved to the city of Nanao. Our task here is to move everything out of this house before it’s demolished. When we first arrived, the house didn’t look that damaged, however on closer inspection there are significant cracks that explain why the house was declared unsafe. Everything needs to be moved out. Peter is carrying some bedding to the truck which will dispose of whatever’s not being saved. We’re guessing the homeowners took with them their basics and relocated to safe housing. With the amount of items still left in the house, it’d be nearly impossible to try to clear out everything that needed to be disposed. It may be hard to tell from these photo, but you may be able to see some plastic bags filled with various items. The city of Nanao has rather strict rules about recycling. The grass is greener

  (click on any photo to enlarge) If I've learned anything from the past trips, it's the need to be flexible. So for us, we learned that moring we were shifting our cleanup efforts from taking down concrete walls to do a different sort of cleanup aht the Animizu Christian Center. The building is currently deemed "unsafe," still the plan is to do the repairs and bring the center back for service. As is often the case, there are weeds surronding the building which need to be removed, thus our task for the day. As Aaron was cutting back some of the branches of the tree, there were other surprises including some wiring, debris, and other items. It became a personal goal to chop down the overgrown bush (tree?) by lunchtime. Note we didn't bring a full-sized saw, nor any power equipment. All we had to work with was a smaller hand saw. A brief note

  A brief note We are back in the US after our ten day excursion to Ishikawa, Japan. I’m up at 5 in the morning not because of jet lag, but because Peter and I shared a cold and I’m waiting for the decongestant to kick in. I nonetheless wanted to thank you for reading this blog, and for your prayers and support of our volunteer efforts. More thoughts about this year’s trip forthcoming, so please stay tuned.
