Stepping up to the task

July 4

It turns out we didn’t return to the house we were helping clear out for demolition yesterday. Instead, we were sent to another building a few miles away, also set for demolition but had its own challenges.

We cleared out a second story residence, mostly consisting of kitchen goods and children’s play items. That in itself was challenging. An added feature of this job was the stairs leading to the second floor were badly corroded, so we had to use a stepladder to carry goods down the stairs.

The good news is the family did a good job of packing goods. However it meant some heavy boxes had to be brought downstairs via the ladder that served as our makeshift steps.

So that’s me slowly sliding down a full box of items from the second floor to where Aaron was standing. It required some patience to keep the box (and me) from tumbling down. Fortunately, there were no incidents to either the goods or the persons involved.

By the way, the moniker on the box (note it says “GOON”) is the name of a popular brand of Japanese diapers. Please refrain from any comments about the box and any application to the individual carrying the box.

Similar to what we did the day before, everything we took out of the apartment had to be sorted for recycling. That took as much time as emptying the rooms. The weather was challenging. When it was sunny, it became uncomfortably hot. When we got a breeze, it blew some of the paper that we were trying to sort and stuff. Nonetheless, the task was accomplished.

Adachi Sensei loaded the truck with the goods we bagged as well as some more bulky items. There was a lot, but it all managed to fit on the flatbed.

We then traveled to the recycling center to drop off all of the items, it also required more sorting.

This being our last night before our departure, we decided to check out a restaurant that was walking distance from where we were staying. It was a true Mom & Pop operation, serving a steady stream of customers. We were quite pleased with our meal. Not pictured is the sashimi special that I ordered, for 1000 yen it was a bargain.

And we’re done for the year. We’ve a couple of more stories to share so please stay tuned. #notohelp #glints #westlightcommunitychurch
